NASA to Reveal New Discoveries in News Conference on Oceans Beyond Earth

NASA is exploring the ocean worlds in our solar system as part of our search for life outside of Earth. Credits: NASA
NASA will discuss new results about ocean worlds in our solar system from the agencys Cassini spacecraft and the Hubble Space Telescope during a news briefing 2 p.m. EDT on Thursday, April 13. The event, to be held at the James Webb Auditorium at NASA Headquarters in Washington, will include remote participation from experts across the country.

The briefing will be broadcast live on NASA Television and the agency's website.

These new discoveries will help inform future ocean world exploration -- including NASAs upcoming Europa Clipper mission planned for launch in the 2020s -- and the broader search for life beyond Earth.

The news briefing participants will be: Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator, Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington
Jim Green, director, Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters
Mary Voytek, astrobiology senior scientist at NASA Headquarters
Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California Hunter Waite, Cassini Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer team lead at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio

Aurora alert! Thanks to huge coronal hole

The hole is gigantic and facing Earths way. Possible aurora sightings at the latitude of the northern U.S. – for example, in Michigan or Maine – on January 4 and 5.

Have you heard about the huge coronal hole in the sun that is facing Earths way? According to spaceweather.com, it means the chances of geomagnetic storms (think of them as disturbances in the force!) and thus auroras for those at high latitudes are high this week. Should you be worried? No. The Space Weather Prediction Center calls this a minor storm. Astronomer Tony Phillips, who writes Spaceweather.com, wrote on January 3, 2017:

NOAA forecasters have boosted the odds of polar geomagnetic storms on January 4 and 5 to 65% as a stream of solar wind approaches Earth. The hot wind is flowing from a large hole in the suns atmosphere.

Astronomer Karl Battams (@sungrazercomets on Twitter) explained coronal holes today in his Twitter feed:

The sun is mostly covered in lots of closed magnetic fields In coronal holes, the fields are open out to space.

Tony Phillips (@spaceweather on Twitter) explained:

Coronal holes are regions where the suns magnetic field peels back and allows solar wind to escape Residents of the Arctic should expect G1-class geomagnetic storms and bright auroras in the nights ahead.

Okay so will you see auroras? That depends on where you live. At this writing, the Space Weather Prediction Center is calling for auroras at 60 degrees N. and further northward, with possible aurora sightings at the latitude of the northern United States – for example, in Michigan or Maine – on the nights of January 4 and 5, 2017. Be sure to check for updates!

Bottom line: A huge Earth-facing coronal hole has caused an increase chance of geomagnetic storms on January 3 and 4, 2017. Aurora alert for those at high latitudes!

Alien hunters are claiming that the space agency stream shows out-of-this-world activity above our atmosphere in new footage

A disc-shaped UFO has been filmed by NASA cameras entering the Earth's atmosphere - or so alien enthusiasts believe.

The latest sighting of space activity has been shared online as a large UFO in a disc shape appears to drift by the camera.

Uploaded to YouTube by UFO Sightings , the craft appears to have an indentation at its rear.

The poster clearly believes it's an out-of-this-world close encounter, calling the video "New NASA uncut footage shows clear UFO".

But despite their assertion that it's 100% genuine proof of extraterrestrial visitors, commenters are split.

But doubting Jan Cutler added: UFOs entering our airspace should be registered and required to pay for a permit or license and be regulated as to flight paths.

Given the multitude of sightings on YouTube the money collected could resolve our national debt.

It's not the first time that enthusiasts have cited NASA's stream of the Earth for its UFO inclusion.

In July, critics said that the agency shut down its live International Space Station feed as a mysterious UFO entered the Earth's atmosphere.

And earlier this month it was again accused of an alien cover-up after changing its ISS coverage , but the conspiracy theorists got it wrong.

It turned out that an announcement about a change to their Space Station Live feed did not affect the live streaming.

NASA cuts live feed from ISS after UFO spotted (VIDEO)

NASA is once again being accused of hiding evidence of UFOs after cutting off a live stream from the International Space Station (ISS) during which an unidentified object was spotted. Keen space observer Streetcap1, who has almost 40,000 subscribers on YouTube, claims some sort of otherworldly object can be seen flying near the ISS during a live stream carried by the space agency on September 30.

A recording of the stream was uploaded to YouTube by Streetcap1 highlighting a blue light apparently hovering in the distance.


While skeptics argue the light is merely lens flare, Steetcap1 denies this is the case as the unidentified object is brighter on the left side due to the light from the Sun.

Steetcap1 says that not long after the object came into shot, NASA cut the feed, which UFO hunters believe is proof that the agency is trying to mask the presence of alien life.



NASA announced in July that they were planning on phasing out the ISS live stream on their website, which angered those who monitored the stream for signs of aliens, again claiming NASA were trying to suppress evidence of alien life.

NASA shuts down live International Space Station feed as 'mysterious UFO enters Earth's atmosphere'

The incident caused speculation online - and is not the first time NASA have been accused of tampering with the feed



UFO spotters have raised the alarm after the International Space Station live feed cut out just as a large mysterious object appeared to enter Earth's atmosphere.

The incident occurred on July 9 and was first reported by prolific UFO hunter Streetcap1 in a video uploaded the same day.

The enthusiast did not directly imply that the object was an alien spacecraft saying: This could well be a meteor or the like.

But he implied that the camera being turned off was slightly sinister: "What made it interesting was that the camera cut off when the UFO seemed to stop.

Other enthusiasts put forward theories including one who suggested in could be the Chinese space cargo ship Tiangong-1.

Conspiracy theorists have gone into overdrive



This is not the first time that UFO hunters have accused NASA of cutting transmission after a mysterious UFO appeared on the live ISS stream.

A NASA spokesperson made a statement earlier in April denying allegations that NASA technicians deliberately shut down transmission when UFOs appear on the live video.

According to the spokesperson, NASA never intentionally shuts down live transmission to hide UFOs. Loss of video is usually due to loss of signals from the ISS.

A spoken message was found in a probe. Curiosity rover recorded it...now this is interesting. I recently talked to an anonomous person on Twitter who said that she worked for a small communications company and one day was approached by a man who had this information. The man has since passed away, but she still has the voice recording of the probe that was found. Its odd, for sure, no doubt about that, but NASA doesn't like to tell the public about what they find. We always have to find out through the grape vine of old records, photos, eyewitnesses. So...I leave this up to the readers here. What do you think about this alien message?

It has some similarities to the spoken message of the W56 at Rocca Pia, Italy. I went through some old posts and I think the probe may be this object below. I will put a video of the possible alien probe UFO researchers found on Mars a few years ago, its hovering. It might be the one that the eyewitness is speaking about.

NASA to Announce Latest Kepler Discoveries During Media Teleconference

When Kepler was launched in March 2009, scientists did not know how common planets were outside our solar system. Thanks to Kepler's treasure trove of discoveries, astronomers now believe there may be at least one planet orbiting every star in the sky.

Kepler completed its prime mission in 2012, and collected data for an additional year in an extended mission. In 2014, the spacecraft began a new extended mission called K2. K2 continues the search for exoplanets while introducing new research opportunities to study young stars, supernovae and other cosmic phenomenon.

Ames manages the Kepler and K2 missions for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, managed Kepler mission development. Three months ago, news broke that a giant "alien megastructure" could exist around a bizarre-looking star 1,500 light-years away.

While the prospect of aliens was first launched by Penn State astronomer Jason Wright, almost everyone in the astronomy community agreed that the chances that this was the case were "very low."

Now, the latest investigations into this strange star by Louisiana State University astronomer Bradley Schaefer have reignited the alien theory, New Scientist reported.

What makes this star, KIC8462852, so bizarre is the drastic changes in light we see from it over time. Many stars experience temporary fluctuations in brightness, increasing and decreasing in luminosity over time, but KIC8462852's changes are severe by comparison.
Between 2009 and 2013, astronomers using the Kepler space telescope discovered that it would sometimes lose up to 20% of its brightness. What's more, the changes didn't follow any obvious pattern.
That would suggest something gigantic must be blocking the light at random times, meaning that it couldn't be a planet or other regular orbiting object because that would generate a distinct pattern of dimming light. It must be something that changes shape over time, thereby blocking different levels of light at random intervals.

An alien megastructure, called a Dyson swarm, was suggested as one explanation for what scientists have observed, but the most likely reason astronomers came up with was comets — a giant family of them.
But Shaefer says not so fast.

"The comet-family idea was reasonably put forth as the best of the proposals, even while acknowledging that they all were a poor lot," Schaefer told New Scientist. "But now we have a refutation of the idea, and indeed, of all published ideas."

To make his discovery, Schaefer had to dig deep down into the astronomy archives at Harvard. It turns out, astronomers have data on KIC8462852 dating back as far as 1890.
By analyzing over 1,200 measurements of this star's brightness taken from 1890 through 1989, Schaefer found that the irregular dimming of KIC8462852 has been going on for over 100 years. Schaefer published his findings in the online preprint server arXiv.org.
What's more, he explains in his paper that this "century-long dimming trend requires an estimated 648,000 giant comets (each with 200 km diameter) all orchestrated to pass in front of the star within the last century," which he said is "completely implausible."

So what is it?

By killing the comet theory, Schaefer has brought us one step closer to finding out what is really happening around KIC8462852.

At the same time, he's also reignited the possibility that the source could be an alien megastructure that an advanced alien civilization has been slowly building over time. One thing's certain for Schaefer: The bizarre dimmings are probably caused by a single, physical mechanism that's undergoing some type of ongoing change.
"The century-long dimming and the day-long dips are both just extreme ends of a spectrum of timescales for unique dimming events, so by Ockham's Razor, all this is produced by one physical mechanism," Shaefer said in his paper. "This one mechanism does not appear as any isolated catastrophic event in the last century, but rather must be some ongoing process with continuous effects."
Schaefer isn't the only one interested in learning more about KIC8462852. Late last year, astronomer Doug Vakoch and his team at the new organization called SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) International — not to be confused with the SETI Institute — went hunting for aliens around KIC8462852.
They searched for signals that an alien civilization might be beaming toward Earth either in radio or visible wavelengths, but ultimately they came up empty handed. So, if it is aliens, then they're being awfully quiet.

Trainers of dogs, horses, and other animal performers take note: a bacterium named Moorella thermoacetica has been induced to perform only a single trick, but its a doozy. Berkeley Lab researchers are using M. thermoacetica to perform photosynthesis – despite being non-photosynthetic – and also to synthesize semiconductor nanoparticles in a hybrid artificial photosynthesis system for converting sunlight into valuable chemical products.

Weve demonstrated the first self-photosensitization of a non-photosynthetic bacterium, M. thermoacetica, with cadmium sulfide nanoparticles to produce acetic acid from carbon dioxide at efficiencies and yield that are comparable to or may even exceed the capabilities of natural photosynthesis, says Peidong Yang, a chemist with Berkeley Labs Materials Sciences Division, who led this work.

The bacteria/inorganic-semiconductor hybrid artificial photosynthesis system weve created is self-replicating through the bio-precipitation of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles, which serve as the light harvester to sustain cellular metabolism, Yang says. Demonstrating this cyborgian ability to self-augment the functionality of biological systems through inorganic chemistry opens up the integration of biotic and abiotic components for the next generation of advanced solar-to-chemical conversion technologies.

Yang, who also holds appointments with UC Berkeley and the Kavli Energy NanoScience Institute (Kavli-ENSI) at Berkeley, is the corresponding author of a paper describing this research in Science. The paper is titled Self-photosensitization of non-photosynthetic bacteria for solar-to-chemical production. Co-authors are Kelsey Sakimoto and Andrew Barnabas Wong.

Photosynthesis is the process by which nature harvests sunlight and uses the solar energy to synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water. Artificial versions of photosynthesis are being explored for the clean, green and sustainable production of chemical products now made from petroleum, primarily fuels and plastics. Yang and his research group have been at the forefront of developing artificial photosynthetic technologies that can realize the full potential of solar-to-chemical synthesis.

In our latest study, we combined the highly efficient light harvesting of an inorganic semiconductor with the high specificity, low cost, and self-replication and self-repair of a biocatalyst, Yang says. By inducing the self-photosensitization of M. thermoacetica with cadmium sulfide nanoparticles, we enabled the photosynthesis of acetic acid from carbon dioxide over several days of light-dark cycles at relatively high quantum yields, demonstrating a self-replicating route toward solar-to-chemical carbon dioxide reduction.

Cadmium sulfide is a well-studied semiconductor with a band structure and that is well-suited for photosynthesis. As both an electrograph (meaning it can undergo direct electron transfers from an electrode), and an acetogen (meaning it can direct nearly 90-percent of its photosynthetic products towards acetic acid), M. thermoacetica serves as the ideal model organism for demonstrating the capabilities of this hybrid artificial photosynthesis system.

Our hybrid system combines the best of both worlds: the light-harvesting capabilities of semiconductors with the catalytic power of biology, Yang says. In this study, weve demonstrated not only that biomaterials can be of sufficient quality to carry out useful photochemistry, but that in some ways they may be even more advantageous in biological applications.
