A nine-year-old girl has been killed by an extremely rare brain-eating amoeba which she contracted while playing in water.

Hally Yust died after the amoeba, which is found in fresh water, went through her nose and into her brain.

The youngster's family rushed Hally to hospital with symptoms similar to meningitis. But tests revealed she had contracted the deadly amoeba infection which is virtually incurable.

Despite the efforts of medics, Hally, from Johnson County, Kansas, US,  died on Wednesday.

Her devastated family said they will all continue to enjoy water sports following Hally's death.

As reported by Fox News, the family said: Our precious daughter, Hally, loved life and part of her great joy was spending time playing in the water.

"Her life was taken by a rare amoeba organism that grows in many different fresh water settings. We want you to know this tragic event is very, very rare, and this is not something to become fearful about."

The amoeba which killed Hally is called Naegleria fowleri and is found in lakes and rivers.

In more than 50 years, there have been fewer than 200 cases.

Doctors say that once the amoeba is in the brain there is nothing that can be done. Symptoms - which can take five days to appear - include a stiff neck, confusion and headache.
