Homeless man returns found $10K cheque - and gets big surprise

A homeless man who returned a $10,000 cheque to a US business owner got a life-changing surprise in return.

It all started with something real estate agent Roberta Hoskie had lost on the streets of New Haven – a cheque for more than $10,000 (around 8,400 euros).

Elmer Alvarez found the cheque. His first thought?

Do the right thing. Just look for the person and just return the cheque, he said.

After Roberta got the cheque back and learned Alvarez was homeless, she took to Facebook to thank him in a video that got thousands of views

The two strangers had something in common. Roberta had also once been homeless – a teenage mother and a high school dropout.

$417 a month – Ill never forget it, its all I had to take care of myself and my son, she told NBC News.

But someone helped her turn her life around.

On Thanksgiving week, Roberta surprised Elmer, getting him job training, career counseling and a job interview.

Her last gift to Alvarez moved him to tears.

This winter you dont have to worry about being in cold, Hoskie said. We have housing for you.

Hoskie said once Alvarez gets on his feet, she wants him to pay it forward and help others.

A jury that saw surveillance video of a homeless man stabbing a 16-year-old girl and several others who subdued him at a Pittsburgh Target store was expected to begin deliberating his fate on attempted homicide and other charges.
But the defense says the man, 44-year-old Leon Walls, is mentally ill, was hearing voices and isn't legally responsible for the rampage on March 25, 2013.
Allegheny County prosecutors played the video at trial Wednesday.
The jury was expected to begin deliberating after hearing closing arguments Thursday morning.
Police say Walls grabbed the girl by the hair and dragged her away from her family before stabbing her in the chest and arm.
Walls then used her as a shield as others tried to stop him, cutting several of them in the process.

The girl has recovered.

Two officers pull one person away. The other officers, who are farther from the camera, surround a man.

Drop the gun, officers shout several times with their own guns drawn. About five shots can be heard on the video.

Witnesses believed the man had been killed by police, but it was also reported that the man was taken to a hospital by paramedics. Either way, he was pronounced dead after the attack.

Witness also began shouting that they did not believe the man who was shot was armed.

According to witnesses, there was some arguing inside a test, before police arrived and the situation escalated.

A witness said the man refused to come out of his tent on the sidewalk when officers arrived. Other witnesses told the Times the man was physically fighting with officers and may have reached for one of their guns

Volunteers with Love Thy Neighbor were given notices to appear for sharing food with homeless people under Fort Lauderdale's new "sharing ban" regulations. They were forced to shut down the sharing and relocate to private property. Unfortunately the people most in need of food aid are in this area where the sharing ban enforcement is being focused

Albuquerque polices new chief says the latest officer involved shooting that killed a homeless man in the foothills is justified.

But new video police released Friday is raising a lot of questions about how it all played out.

The release came Friday as APDs first press conference since the shooting.

Chief Gordon Eden released video today that was recorded from the helmet of Officer Dominque Perez who fired three shots.

Police say 38-year-old James M. Boyd is the man who was killed. Boyd was arguing with police for hours last Sunday in the foothills after officers were going to talk to him about illegally camping.

At Fridays press conference, Chief Gordon Eden said Boyd pulled two knives on the officers when they first went to talk to him.

Chief Eden said Officers Keith Sandy and Dominque Perez each fired their rifles three times.
Its unclear how many bullets hit Boyd.

Chief Eden called the shooting justified today saying officers also used non-lethal force, first throwing a flash bang then releasing a dog while simultaneously using a taser gun and bean bag rounds.

Chief Eden said officers fired because Boyd made a direct threat at the canine officer who was unarmed.
