Mysterious 'fairy circles' found in Australia

The phenomenon, which was previously thought to be exclusive to the deserts of Namibia, has for the first time been spotted thousands of miles away in a remote part of the Australian outback.

A conclusive explanation for these anomalous circles has proven elusive for decades, however this latest discovery could prove invaluable in helping scientists get to the bottom of the mystery.

The circles themselves have been part of myths and folklore for years with the local people of Namibia attributing them to everything from dragon burn marks to the footprints of the gods.

The most popular conventional explanation at the moment is that the circles are formed by ants or termites feeding on the roots and pushing the grass back from their nests in a circular pattern.

In Australia however there was little evidence of insect nests in or around the circles.

Another possible explanation is that the plants are 'organizing' themselves in an effort to maximize their access to water and nutrients in these hot and dry environments.

Ecologist Stephan Getzin believes that this is most likely to be the case given the evidence.

"You should never claim to put an end to the mystery," he said. "Wee just made one significant step forward in solving the problem."

The hunt is now on for fairy circles in other countries to help confirm this theory once and for all.

Deep in the Australian outback, circular, grass-ringed patches of earth stretch for several hundred square kilometres across the red, ancient soil. This is the first time these fairy circles have been spotted outside the Namibian desert, where their formation has evaded explanation for decades. The new discovery could help resolve the long-standing mystery of how they form.

It shows that the fairy circles of Namibia do not exist on their own, says Stephan Getzin, an ecologist at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany.

Getzin and his team visited the site 15 kilometres south-east of Newman, Australia, to measure the circles and analyse the conditions on the ground after an environmentalist working for an iron ore mine nearby sent them an aerial shot of the formations.

From the birds-eye perspective the pattern becomes clear, and you see the regular features indicative of the fairy circles, Getzin says.

The teams investigations found clues to the circles origins, a mystery that has defied explanation for decades (see video above).

In Namibia, local legends have explained the circles as the footsteps of the gods, burn marks from the breath of underground dragons, or even landing spots for UFOs.

The most popular scientific theory is that ants or termites nibble on the roots of grasses, so the plants die back in a circle from the site of an insect nest.

More recently, however, another theory has emerged that says the circles arise when the plants compete for water and nutrients and organise themselves to maximise access to scarce resources. The latest theory suggests such circles should be discovered in other arid regions of the world, too.

The Australian rings back up this self-organisation hypothesis. Getzins team found few ant or termite nests within, or near, the circles and no correlation between rings and locations of the nests that did exist.

But they did find that the hard soil crust within the circles was almost impermeable to rainfall – all the water pouring into this area flowed towards the periphery, where the thirsty plants await. That gave us clear hints that the gaps serve as a source of water for the vegetation, Getzin says.

More water around the circle edges means more biomass and roots, which leads to the soil becoming looser. The less dense soil allows more water to penetrate and feed the vegetation, creating a feedback loop supporting the plants at the edge of the circle.

The exact mechanism for how the circles arise is different in Namibia. There, the circles actually soak up more water and act as underground reservoirs for plants growing around the edges (see graphic, below).

The dominant grasses of the Triodia genus found in direct vicinity to the fairy circles in Australia also form other typical drought patterns such as stripes, labyrinths or spot patterns with individual plants surrounded by bare earth.

This provides strong evidence that the fairy circles also arise due to competition for water, Getzin says, though he doesnt claim to have solved the origin of the circles.

Its pretty good evidence for the self-organising theory, says Michael Cramer, a biologist at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. There is still a long way to go to make it conclusive, but I think the evidence is mounting.

A 21 yr-old girl has died after committing suicide following an argument with her boyfriend.

Several cars managed to stop after seeing her on the road. While there was someone who could have rendered assistance, and helped to block traffic or keeping her off the road, they chose not to assist and left her in the path of oncoming vehicles instead.

One vehicle, blinded by headlights of oncoming traffic, did not see her on the road and she suffered a fatal head injury.

Unfortunately, the driver of that vehicle now has to live with her selfish act.

Surveillance cameras have captured the shooting of 30-year-old Hashim Latipov while on a train. He has survived the shooting and remains in a serious condition.

The incident occurred on the Metropolitan Subway on November 17

The gunman sit down and go quietly at first, but then the attention of one of them attracts a young man sitting next to him. At some point, one of the criminals nods his opponent, and then utters a phrase. 

The a dramatic turn of events, as one of the young men pulls out a gun traumatic and in front of terrified passengers shoots 30-year-old Hashim Latipov at point-blank in the stomach, before kicking him.

He is then shot a second time in the face through the jaw. 

The criminals wait until the train has stopped, and but not before the criminals have again threatened the victim, before casually exit the train.

Man survives being shot at close range by two Middle Eastern men


In an appeal for information from the public, police have released CCTV footage of a man who was shot after being chased by two men in a car park in Rydalmere, Australia.

Just before 1am on May 1, police were called to the car park on Bridge Street where a 52-year-old man had been shot in the back, foot and groin.

The man told police he was returning to his car when he was approached by two men and shot a number of times, before the men fled the scene. He suffered extensive injuries and spent a considerable period of time in hospital.

The Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad is continuing to investigate the shooting under Strike Force Maloney. They have released CCTV images of the incident so that members of the public can help to identify the offenders. One of the men is believed to have recited a prayer in Arabic prior to the shooting
