The Snooper's Charter passed into law this week – say goodbye to your privacy

The fact that youre on this website is – potentially – state knowledge. Service providers must now store details of everything you do online for 12 months – and make it accessible to dozens of public authorities

mobile-device-security

The Investigatory Powers Act this week quietly passed into law Getty Images/iStockphoto This week a law was passed that silently rips privacy from the modern world. Its called the Investigatory Powers Act.

Under the guise of counter-terrorism, the British state has achieved totalitarian-style surveillance powers – the most intrusive system of any democracy in history. It now has the ability to indiscriminately hack, intercept, record, and monitor the communications and internet use of the entire population.

The hundreds of chilling mass surveillance programmes revealed by Edward Snowden in 2013 were – we assumed – the result of a failure of the democratic process. Snowdens bravery finally gave Parliament and the public the opportunity to scrutinise this industrial-scale spying and bring the state back into check.

But, in an environment of devastatingly poor political opposition, the Government has actually extended state spying powers beyond those exposed by Snowden – setting a world-leading precedent.

The fact that youre on this website is – potentially – state knowledge. Service providers must now store details of everything you do online for 12 months – and make it accessible to dozens of public authorities.

What does your web history look like? Does it reveal your political interests? Social networks? Religious ideas? Medical concerns? Sexual interests? Pattern of life?

What might the last year of your internet use reveal?

Government agencies have even won powers to hack millions of computers, phones and tablets en masse, leaving them vulnerable to further criminal attacks.

You might think that you have nothing to hide, and therefore nothing to fear. In that case, you may as well post your email and social media login details in the comments below.

But I dont think we do feel that blase about our privacy – we cherish our civil liberties. Everyone has a stake in guarding our democracy, protecting minorities from suspicionless surveillance, defending protest rights, freedom of the press, and enjoying the freedom to explore and express oneself online. These freedoms allow our thoughts, opinions and personalities to flourish and develop – they are the very core of democracy.

Has any country in history given itself such extensive surveillance powers and remained a rights-respecting democracy? We need not look too far back – or overseas to see the risks of unbridled surveillance. In recent years, the British state has spied on law-abiding environmental activists, democratically elected politicians, victims of torture and police brutality, and hundreds of journalists.

In fact, as the Bill finally passed on Wednesday evening, I was training a group of British and American journalists in how to protect themselves from state surveillance – not just from Russia or Syria, but from their own countries.

When Edward Snowden courageously blew the whistle on mass surveillance he warned that, armed with such tools, a new leader might say that because of the crisis, because of the dangers we face in the world, some new and unpredicted threat, we need more authority, we need more power. And there will be nothing the people can do at that point to oppose it.

The US finds itself with a President-elect who has committed to monitoring all mosques, banning all Muslims, investigating Black Lives Matter activists and deporting two to three million people. And with the ushering into law of the UK-US free trade in mass surveillance, MPs may have a lot to answer for.

Liberty and its members fought tooth and nail against this new law from its inception to the moment it was passed. That fight is not yet over. Our message to Government: see you in court.

Did UFOs abduct 1,500 sheep from a field in Lincolnshire?

By CarolineW_LE | Posted: August 17, 2016

2016-08-30_042407

The documentary maker said he believed the alleged sightings could be linked to the disappearance of the huge number of sheep.

A documentary film maker has questioned whether the disappearance of 1,500 sheep from a field near Louth was the result of UFOs.

Footage, uploaded to YouTube by an account called dot luter, has investigated possible UFO sightings across the East Lindsey area with one witness claiming to have seen a huge spherical object hovering in the sky at Alford.

READ MORE: Lincolnshire's X-Files: The truth is out there!

The 1,500 sheep mysteriously disappeared from the field at Stenigot overnight in September 2011. No one in the area claimed to see or hear anything.

Arrests were made at the time in connection with the disappearance but the documentary footage claims no one was ever charged or prosecuted.

In the documentary, UFO spotter Eric Goring from Brinkhill, told the video he had seen hundreds of sightings of what he called "the black triangle" not far from the area at the time.

UFO 1

He said: "I saw these white or orange or yellow balls of light which turned out to be the black triangle.

"They were out on the fields going round and round lit up bright and then when they got closer I could see the black triangle.

"I've seen the black triangle hundreds of times and up to 40 in one night."

Mr Goring said the triangular objects were around 30ft long on each side.

"I have seen them come down to the ground at thousands of miles an hour. They come straight to the ground, they loop out and then go up again.

"It floats and it makes no noise," he said.

"It was very dark, no luminosity, but it had legs and there were lights just above the legs." Taxi driver Morag Taylor, from Alford, told the video maker she had once seen a similar triangular sighting on a drive from Skegness to Louth in the early hours of the morning.

She said: "There was a thing hovering in the sky with lights, it was too big to be a star.

"Then it just shot away at speed. I thought it was much faster than a Harrier jet.

"It was quite low - probably about three storeys high.

"It was quite big, probably the size of an articulated lorry.

"It was very dark, no luminosity, but it had legs and there were lights just above the legs. It was triangular."

UFO 2

Another witness who spoke on film, said he once saw a huge spherical object in the sky while he was driving between Alford and Mablethorpe.

He said: "I came round a corner and my little girl, who was in the back, screamed.

"The car in front stopped. There was a grey, egg shaped thing.

"I would say it was three times longer than the width of the road.

"It was stopped right above the road. It was absolutely huge, bigger than a plane.

"All of a sudden it shot back in the opposite direction it came from."

The documentary maker said he believed the alleged sightings could be linked to the disappearance of the huge number of sheep.

He said: "I don't think any open minded person would doubt there is something perculiar going on in the skies near this sparsely populated area."

Sex superbug that is sweeping the country: Experts' worry over gonorrhoea strain that's becoming immune to antibiotics

New strain found in the West Midlands, north and south east of England
It has been found to be highly resistant to drug antibiotic azithromycin
There have been 34 confirmed cases since November 2014

By HARVEY DAY FOR MAILONLINE
PUBLISHED: 13:47 GMT, 17 April 2016 | UPDATED: 11:59 GMT, 21 April 2016

A sexually transmitted superbug that is on the verge of becoming untreatable is sweeping across Britain, health experts warn.
Cases of the drug-resistant gonorrhoea strain have been confirmed in West Yorkshire, the West Midlands, London and the North East.
But there are likely to be many others which have gone unreported, officials fear. It is caused by a bacteria quickly becoming immune to one of the last two available antibiotics. Experts fear it will soon develop a resistance to the second drug – and there are no others in reserve. Health officials are urging the public to limit casual sex and wear condoms with a new partner.

A highly drug-resistant type of 'super-gonorrhoea' is spreading across the country, with senior medics warning it may become untreatable. Neisseria gonorrhoeae (above), the bacterium responsible for the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea

GPs have also been warned to be extra vigilant and ensure they prescribe the proper treatment. But the spread of this super sexually transmitted disease is further evidence of the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant bugs. For decades, antibiotics have been so overused by GPs and hospital staff that the bacteria have evolved to become resistant. Doctors report that medicines including penicillin no longer work on sore throats, skin infections and more seriously, pneumonia.
Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies has said the threat is as severe as terrorism – with patients dying from minor cuts after succumbing to drug-resistant bugs. And only last week Chancellor George Osborne said that antibiotic-resistant bacteria will claim ten million deaths a year worldwide by 2050 – even more than cancer.

Public Health England yesterday issued an alert stating that cases of this super-gonorrhoea were continuing to rise and represented a very real threat.
So far 34 adults have been diagnosed with the strain since November 2014 but this is almost certainly only the tip of the iceberg. More than half of women and one in ten men never see symptoms so may pass on the infection unaware.
But they are at risk of serious complications and untreated, the disease can cause infertility or inflammation of the womb. It is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and may lead to miscarriage, premature labour or sight problems in the baby. Usually gonorrhoea is treated with a jab, known as ceftriaxone, then by a pill called azithromycin. But this strain is already partly resistant to the latter and experts are worried it will soon also become immune to the former. Dr Gwenda Hughes, of PHE, the Government body in charge of preventing the spread of bugs, said: We cannot afford to be complacent.

3345345400000578-0-image-a-101_1460900340831

The strain is 'highly resistant' to the antibiotic azithromycin, meaning medics are relying on a second drug, ceftriaxone, to treat it. Above an image of gonorrhea

If strains of gonorrhoea emerge that are resistant to both azithromycin and ceftriaxone, treatment options would be limited as there is no new antibiotic available. Dr Elizabeth Carlin, president of the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV, said: The fact that we have resistance developing to one of the drugs we use means that we could potentially be left with only one drug to use. If it becomes resistant to that, we would be in a very difficult position. Doctors are also worried as the strain is now being reported in gay men so may start spreading even more quickly. Dr Peter Greenhouse, a consultant in sexual health based in Bristol, said: The problem is [they] tend to spread infections a lot faster simply as they change partners more quickly. In December, Dame Sally Davies wrote to GPs and pharmacists in December warning them that gonorrhoea was at risk of becoming an untreatable disease. She reminded them to ensure they prescribed both the ceftriaxone jab and the azithromycin pill – some were omitting the injections. Gonorrhoea is the second most common STD after chlamydia and is spread through unprotected sex. Annual cases have risen by a fifth, and some experts link this to a rise in casual sex. There were 34,958 confirmed infections in England during 2014, most commonly in the under-25s, up from 29,419 the previous year. Officials at PHE have tried to contact all sexual partners of anyone diagnosed with the superbug but have only managed to find 22 of the 50 partners. More than 90 per cent of those they did track down were confirmed as having the infection. This means there is a high chance the other adults also had it and may have passed it on.

3345300D00000578-0-image-a-102_1460900352048

If untreated, gonorrhoea can result in severe complications and lead to infertility or septicaemia in rare cases

GONORRHOEA: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DISEASE

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae or gonococcus.
The bacteria can infect the cervix (entrance to the womb), the urethra (tube through which urine passes out of the body), the rectum and less commonly the throat or eyes. The infection can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her baby. If you are pregnant and may have gonorrhoea, it is important to get tested and treated before your baby is born.
Without treatment, gonorrhoea can cause permanent blindness in a newborn baby. Gonorrhoea is usually treated with a single antibiotic injection and a single antibiotic tablet. With effective treatment, most of your symptoms should improve within a few days. It is usually recommended that you attend a follow-up appointment a week or two after treatment, so another test can be carried out to see if you are clear of infection. Anyone who is sexually active can catch gonorrhoea, especially people who change partners frequently or do not use a barrier method of contraception, such as a condom, when having sex. Gonorrhoea is the second most common bacterial STI in the UK after chlamydia. Almost 35,000 cases were reported in England during 2014, with most cases affecting young men and women under the age of 25. Previous successful treatment for gonorrhoea doesn't make you immune to catching the infection again.

PANAMA PAPERS: BRITISH BANKER HELPED NORTH KOREA SELL ARMS, EXPAND NUCLEAR PROGRAM

BY MIRREN GIDDA ON 4/6/16 AT 4:33 AM

he British banker Nigel Cowie, who lived in North Korea for over two decades, allegedly set up an offshore company used by Pyongyang to expand its nuclear weapons program and sell arms. News of his involvement came to light following Sundays leak of the Panama Papers, which have shed light on global offshore finance arrangements.

Cowie moved to North Korea in 1995, rising to become head of Daedong Credit Bank (DCB), the countrys first foreign bank, The Guardian reports. In 2006, he led a group of investors that bought a 70 percent stake in the bank. That same year, Cowie registered an offshoot of DCB in the British Virgin Islands, which law firm Mossack Fonseca—whose clients make up the Panama Papers—incorporated.

In 2013, the U.S. imposed sanctions on the company, claiming that it provided financial services to institutions central to North Koreas arms race, Reuters reports. The offshoot also, the U.S. alleges, carried out international financial transactions with countries trying to avoid North Korea. Mossack Fonseca didnt notice Cowies links to North Korea—despite him giving an address there—until 2010 when it resigned as agent.

Try Newsweek for only $1.25 per week

Cowie, who sold his stake in the bank in 2011, has said via his lawyer that he was unaware of operating with any sanctioned organisation or for any sanctioned purpose, during his tenure.
